Psalm 43
| Judge me, O God, and plead
my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me
from the deceitful and unjust man. |
| For thou art the God of my
strength: why dost thou cast me off? why go I
mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? |
| O send out thy light and
thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me
unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. |
| Then will I go unto the
altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy: yea,
upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God. |
| Why art thou cast down, O
my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me?
hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is
the health of my countenance, and my God. |

| And Salmon begat Booz of
Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed
begat Jesse; |
| And Jesse begat David the
king; and David the king begat Solomon of her
that had been the wife of Urias; |

Ruth 4
| Then went Boaz up to the
gate, and sat him down there: and, behold, the
kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he
said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here.
And he turned aside, and sat down. |
| And he took ten men of the
elders of the city, and said, Sit ye down here.
And they sat down. |
| And he said unto the
kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the
country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which
was our brother Elimelech's: |
| And I thought to advertise
thee, saying, Buy it before the inhabitants, and
before the elders of my people. If thou wilt
redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for
there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am
after thee. And he said, I will redeem it. |
| Then said Boaz, What day
thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi, thou
must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife
of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead
upon his inheritance. |
| And the kinsman said, I
cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own
inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself;
for I cannot redeem it. |
| Now this was the manner in
former time in Israel concerning redeeming and
concerning changing, for to confirm all things;
a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his
neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. |
| Therefore the kinsman said
unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his
shoe. |
| And Boaz said unto the
elders, and unto all the people, Ye are
witnesses this day, that I have bought all that
was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and
Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. |
| Moreover Ruth the Moabitess,
the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my
wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his
inheritance, that the name of the dead be not
cut off from among his brethren, and from the
gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day. |
| And all the people that
were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are
witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come
into thine house like Rachel and like Leah,
which two did build the house of Israel: and do
thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem: |
| And let thy house be like
the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare unto Judah,
of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of
this young woman. |
Ruth 4:1-12 |
Genesis 38
| And it came to pass at that
time, that Judah went down from his brethren,
and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose
name was Hirah. |
| And Judah saw there a
daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was
Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her. |
| And she conceived, and bare
a son; and he called his name Er. |
| And she conceived again,
and bare a son; and she called his name Onan. |
| And she yet again
conceived, and bare a son; and called his name
Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him. |
| And Judah took a wife for
Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar. |
| And Er, Judah's firstborn,
was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the
LORD slew him. |
| And Judah said unto Onan,
Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her,
and raise up seed to thy brother. |
| And Onan knew that the seed
should not be his; and it came to pass, when he
went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled
it on the ground, lest that he should give seed
to his brother. |
| And the thing which he did
displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also. |
| Then said Judah to Tamar
his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy
father's house, till Shelah my son be grown: for
he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his
brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her
father's house. |
| And in process of time the
daughter of Shuah Judah's wife died; and Judah
was comforted, and went up unto his
sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend
Hirah the Adullamite. |
| And it was told Tamar,
saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to
Timnath to shear his sheep. |
| And she put her widow's
garments off from her, and covered her with a
veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open
place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she
saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given
unto him to wife. |
| When Judah saw her, he
thought her to be an harlot; because she had
covered her face. |
| And he turned unto her by
the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me
come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was
his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt
thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me? |
| And he said, I will send
thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt
thou give me a pledge, till thou send it? |
| And he said, What pledge
shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and
thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine
hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her,
and she conceived by him. |
| And she arose, and went
away, and laid by her veil from her, and put on
the garments of her widowhood. |
| And Judah sent the kid by
the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to
receive his pledge from the woman's hand: but he
found her not. |
| Then he asked the men of
that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that
was openly by the way side? And they said, There
was no harlot in this place. |
| And he returned to Judah,
and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of
the place said, that there was no harlot in this
place. |
| And Judah said, Let her
take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I
sent this kid, and thou hast not found her. |
| And it came to pass about
three months after, that it was told Judah,
saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played
the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child
by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth,
and let her be burnt. |
| When she was brought forth,
she sent to her father in law, saying, By the
man, whose these are, am I with child: and she
said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the
signet, and bracelets, and staff. |
| And Judah acknowledged
them, and said, She hath been more righteous
than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my
son. And he knew her again no more. |
| And it came to pass in the
time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in
her womb. |
| And it came to pass, when
she travailed, that the one put out his hand:
and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a
scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. |
| And it came to pass, as he
drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother
came out: and she said, How hast thou broken
forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his
name was called Pharez. |
| And afterward came out his
brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his
hand: and his name was called Zarah. |
Genesis 38 |
Joshua 2
| And Joshua the son of Nun
sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly,
saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they
went, and came into an harlot's house, named
Rahab, and lodged there. |
| And it was told the king of
Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in
hither to night of the children of Israel to
search out the country. |
| And the king of Jericho
sent unto Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men
that are come to thee, which are entered into
thine house: for they be come to search out all
the country. |
| And the woman took the two
men, and hid them, and said thus, There came men
unto me, but I wist not whence they were: |
| And it came to pass about
the time of shutting of the gate, when it was
dark, that the men went out: whither the men
went I wot not: pursue after them quickly; for
ye shall overtake them. |
| But she had brought them up
to the roof of the house, and hid them with the
stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon
the roof. |
| And the men pursued after
them the way to Jordan unto the fords: and as
soon as they which pursued after them were gone
out, they shut the gate. |
| And before they were laid
down, she came up unto them upon the roof; |
| And she said unto the men,
I know that the LORD hath given you the land,
and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that
all the inhabitants of the land faint because of
you. |
| For we have heard how the
LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you,
when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto
the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the
other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly
destroyed. |
| And as soon as we had heard
these things, our hearts did melt, neither did
there remain any more courage in any man,
because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God
in heaven above, and in earth beneath. |
| Now therefore, I pray you,
swear unto me by the LORD, since I have showed
you kindness, that ye will also show kindness
unto my father's house, and give me a true
token: |
| And that ye will save alive
my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and
my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver
our lives from death. |
| And the men answered her,
Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our
business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath
given us the land, that we will deal kindly and
truly with thee. |
| Then she let them down by a
cord through the window: for her house was upon
the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall. |
| And she said unto them, Get
you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you;
and hide yourselves there three days, until the
pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go
your way. |
| And the men said unto her,
We will be blameless of this thine oath which
thou hast made us swear. |
| Behold, when we come into
the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet
thread in the window which thou didst let us
down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and
thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy
father's household, home unto thee. |
| And it shall be, that
whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house
into the street, his blood shall be upon his
head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever
shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall
be on our head, if any hand be upon him. |
| And if thou utter this our
business, then we will be quit of thine oath
which thou hast made us to swear. |
| And she said, According
unto your words, so be it. And she sent them
away, and they departed: and she bound the
scarlet line in the window. |
| And they went, and came
unto the mountain, and abode there three days,
until the pursuers were returned: and the
pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but
found them not. |
| So the two men returned,
and descended from the mountain, and passed
over, and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and
told him all things that befell them: |
| And they said unto Joshua,
Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all
the land; for even all the inhabitants of the
country do faint because of us. |
Joshua 2 |
2 Samuel 11
| And it came to pass, after
the year was expired, at the time when kings go
forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his
servants with him, and all Israel; and they
destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged
Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. |
| And it came to pass in an
eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed,
and walked upon the roof of the king's house:
and from the roof he saw a woman washing
herself; and the woman was very beautiful to
look upon. |
| And David sent and inquired
after the woman. And one said, Is not this
Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of
Uriah the Hittite? |
| And David sent messengers,
and took her; and she came in unto him, and he
lay with her; for she was purified from her
uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. |
| And the woman conceived,
and sent and told David, and said, I am with
child. |
| And David sent to Joab,
saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent
Uriah to David. |
| And when Uriah was come
unto him, David demanded of him how Joab did,
and how the people did, and how the war
prospered. |
| And David said to Uriah, Go
down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah
departed out of the king's house, and there
followed him a mess of meat from the king. |
| But Uriah slept at the door
of the king's house with all the servants of his
lord, and went not down to his house. |
| And when they had told
David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his
house, David said unto Uriah, Camest thou not
from thy journey? why then didst thou not go
down unto thine house? |
| And Uriah said unto David,
The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents;
and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord,
are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go
into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie
with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul
liveth, I will not do this thing. |
| And David said to Uriah,
Tarry here to day also, and to morrow I will let
thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that
day, and the morrow. |
| And when David had called
him, he did eat and drink before him; and he
made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie
on his bed with the servants of his lord, but
went not down to his house. |
| And it came to pass in the
morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and
sent it by the hand of Uriah. |
| And he wrote in the letter,
saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the
hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he
may be smitten, and die. |
| And it came to pass, when
Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah
unto a place where he knew that valiant men
were. |
| And the men of the city
went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell
some of the people of the servants of David; and
Uriah the Hittite died also. |
| Then Joab sent and told
David all the things concerning the war; |
| And charged the messenger,
saying, When thou hast made an end of telling
the matters of the war unto the king, |
| And if so be that the
king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee,
Wherefore approached ye so nigh unto the city
when ye did fight? knew ye not that they would
shoot from the wall? |
| Who smote Abimelech the son
of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast a piece of
a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died
in Thebez? why went ye nigh the wall? then say
thou, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead
also. |
| So the messenger went, and
came and showed David all that Joab had sent him
for. |
| And the messenger said unto
David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and
came out unto us into the field, and we were
upon them even unto the entering of the gate. |
| And the shooters shot from
off the wall upon thy servants; and some of the
king's servants be dead, and thy servant Uriah
the Hittite is dead also. |
| Then David said unto the
messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let
not this thing displease thee, for the sword
devoureth one as well as another: make thy
battle more strong against the city, and
overthrow it: and encourage thou him. |
| And when the wife of Uriah
heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she
mourned for her husband. |
| And when the mourning was
past, David sent and fetched her to his house,
and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But
the thing that David had done displeased the
LORD. |
