Songs of Degrees, Part 1
It's Us, Not Me
Songs of Degrees: This is a sermon
series about Psalms 120 through 134. The Songs of Degrees, or the
Songs of Ascents, are meant to teach us about our upward journey
toward what God wills for His church. There are 15 of these songs
and there were 1,500 years between the ministry of Moses and the
earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. When God gave Moses the plan for
the Tabernacle, it was the beginning of His plan to restore man, to
rescue man. This plan, we know, was fulfilled by the death,
resurrection, and ascension of our Lord and Savior.
Paralleling
Exodus 1 with Psalm 120, the Holy Spirit teaches us the importance
of a corporate mindset rather than an individualized mindset. Satan
recognizes what an unstoppable force a unified corporate-minded body
of Christ is, and he deceives Christians in every way he can in
order to keep them from realizing just how big God is. An important
point emphasized in Psalm 120 is that not everyone who talks about
God is sent from God.

Psalm 120
| A Song of degrees. In my
distress I cried unto the LORD, and he heard me. |
| Deliver my soul, O LORD,
from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. |
| What shall be given unto
thee? or what shall be done unto thee, thou
false tongue? |
| Sharp arrows of the mighty,
with coals of juniper. |
| Woe is me, that I sojourn
in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! |
| My soul hath long dwelt
with him that hateth peace. |
| I am for peace: but when I
speak, they are for war. |
Psalm 120 |
Exodus 1
| Now these are the names of
the children of Israel, which came into Egypt;
every man and his household came with Jacob. |
| Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and
Judah, |
| Issachar, Zebulun, and
Benjamin, |
| Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and
Asher. |
| And all the souls that came
out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls:
for Joseph was in Egypt already. |
| And Joseph died, and all
his brethren, and all that generation. |
| And the children of Israel
were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and
multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the
land was filled with them. |
| Now there arose up a new
king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. |
| And he said unto his
people, Behold, the people of the children of
Israel are more and mightier than we: |
| Come on, let us deal wisely
with them; lest they multiply, and it come to
pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they
join also unto our enemies, and fight against
us, and so get them up out of the land. |
| Therefore they did set over
them taskmasters to afflict them with their
burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure
cities, Pithom and Raamses. |
| But the more they afflicted
them, the more they multiplied and grew. And
they were grieved because of the children of
Israel. |
| And the Egyptians made the
children of Israel to serve with rigour: |
| And they made their lives
bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in
brick, and in all manner of service in the
field: all their service, wherein they made them
serve, was with rigour. |
