Songs of Degrees, Part 5
Had It Not Been
Songs of Degrees: This is a sermon
series about Psalms 120 through 134. The Songs of Degrees, or the
Songs of Ascents, are meant to teach us about our upward journey
toward what God wills for His church. There are 15 of these songs
and there were 1,500 years between the ministry of Moses and the
earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. When God gave Moses the plan for
the Tabernacle, it was the beginning of His plan to restore man, to
rescue man. This plan, we know, was fulfilled by the death,
resurrection, and ascension of our Lord and Savior.
A people who are not afraid are a people who cannot be
defeated. God will have a people in the last days who have died to
themselves and who obtain victory over fear and doubt, a people who
know in the depths of their souls that “our help is in the name of
the Lord”.

Psalm 124
| A Song of degrees of David.
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side,
now may Israel say; |
| If it had not been the LORD
who was on our side, when men rose up against
us: |
| Then they had swallowed us
up quick, when their wrath was kindled against
us: |
| Then the waters had
overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our
soul: |
| Then the proud waters had
gone over our soul. |
| Blessed be the LORD, who
hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. |
| Our soul is escaped as a
bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare
is broken, and we are escaped. |
| Our help is in the name of
the LORD, who made heaven and earth. |
Psalm 124 |
Acts 7
| To whom our fathers would
not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their
hearts turned back again into Egypt, |
| Saying unto Aaron, Make us
gods to go before us: for as for this Moses,
which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we
wot not what is become of him. |
| And they made a calf in
those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol,
and rejoiced in the works of their own hands. |
| Then God turned, and gave
them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is
written in the book of the prophets, O ye house
of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts
and sacrifices by the space of forty years in
the wilderness? |
| Yea, ye took up the
tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god
Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them:
and I will carry you away beyond Babylon. |
| Our fathers had the
tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he
had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he
should make it according to the fashion that he
had seen. |
| Which also our fathers that
came after brought in with Jesus into the
possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out
before the face of our fathers, unto the days of
David; |
| Who found favour before
God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the
God of Jacob. |
| But Solomon built him an
house. |
| Howbeit the most High
dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as
saith the prophet, |
| Heaven is my throne, and
earth is my footstool: what house will ye build
me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my
rest? |
| Hath not my hand made all
these things? |
| Ye stiffnecked and
uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always
resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so
do ye. |
| Which of the prophets have
not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain
them which showed before of the coming of the
Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers
and murderers: |
| Who have received the law
by the disposition of angels, and have not kept
it. |
| When they heard these
things, they were cut to the heart, and they
gnashed on him with their teeth. |
Acts 7:39-54 |
Revelation 12
| And there appeared a great
wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun,
and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a
crown of twelve stars: |
| And she being with child
cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be
delivered. |
| And there appeared another
wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon,
having seven heads and ten horns, and seven
crowns upon his heads. |
| And his tail drew the third
part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them
to the earth: and the dragon stood before the
woman which was ready to be delivered, for to
devour her child as soon as it was born. |
| And she brought forth a man
child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of
iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and
to his throne. |
| And the woman fled into the
wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of
God, that they should feed her there a thousand
two hundred and threescore days. |
| And there was war in
heaven: Michael and his angels fought against
the dragon; and the dragon fought and his
angels, |
| And prevailed not; neither
was their place found any more in heaven. |
| And the great dragon was
cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil,
and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he
was cast out into the earth, and his angels were
cast out with him. |
| And I heard a loud voice
saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and
strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the
power of his Christ: for the accuser of our
brethren is cast down, which accused them before
our God day and night. |
| And they overcame him by
the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their
testimony; and they loved not their lives unto
the death. |
| Therefore rejoice, ye
heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the
inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the
devil is come down unto you, having great wrath,
because he knoweth that he hath but a short
time. |
| And when the dragon saw
that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted
the woman which brought forth the man child. |
| And to the woman were given
two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly
into the wilderness, into her place, where she
is nourished for a time, and times, and half a
time, from the face of the serpent. |
| And the serpent cast out of
his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that
he might cause her to be carried away of the
flood. |
| And the earth helped the
woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and
swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out
of his mouth. |
| And the dragon was wroth
with the woman, and went to make war with the
remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments
of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. |
