Songs of Degrees, Part 7
Turn Again Our Captivity
Songs of Degrees: This is a sermon
series about Psalms 120 through 134. The Songs of Degrees, or the
Songs of Ascents, are meant to teach us about our upward journey
toward what God wills for His church. There are 15 of these songs
and there were 1,500 years between the ministry of Moses and the
earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. When God gave Moses the plan for
the Tabernacle, it was the beginning of His plan to restore man, to
rescue man. This plan, we know, was fulfilled by the death,
resurrection, and ascension of our Lord and Savior.
We know that God frees us from our captivity. What we often
don’t understand is how we end up back in captivity again after
we’ve been freed. We can get imprisoned by our own thinking when we
allow doubt, fear, unbelief, anger, unforgiveness, etc. to enter
into our minds and hearts.

Psalm 126
| A Song of degrees. When the
LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were
like them that dream. |
| Then was our mouth filled
with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then
said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done
great things for them. |
| The LORD hath done great
things for us; whereof we are glad. |
| Turn again our captivity, O
LORD, as the streams in the south. |
| They that sow in tears
shall reap in joy. |
| He that goeth forth and
weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless
come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves
with him. |
Psalm 126 |
Matthew 5
| And seeing the multitudes,
he went up into a mountain: and when he was set,
his disciples came unto him: |
| And he opened his mouth,
and taught them, saying, |
| Blessed are the poor in
spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. |
| Blessed are they that
mourn: for they shall be comforted. |
| Blessed are the meek: for
they shall inherit the earth. |
| Blessed are they which do
hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they
shall be filled. |
| Blessed are the merciful:
for they shall obtain mercy. |
| Blessed are the pure in
heart: for they shall see God. |
| Blessed are the
peacemakers: for they shall be called the
children of God. |
| Blessed are they which are
persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven. |
| Blessed are ye, when men
shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall
say all manner of evil against you falsely, for
my sake. |
| Rejoice, and be exceeding
glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so
persecuted they the prophets which were before
you. |
Matthew 5:1-12 |
Psalm 51
| To the chief Musician, A
Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came
unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy
lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of
thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. |
| Wash me thoroughly from
mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. |
| For I acknowledge my
transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. |
| Against thee, thee only,
have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight:
that thou mightest be justified when thou
speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. |
| Behold, I was shapen in
iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. |
| Behold, thou desirest truth
in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou
shalt make me to know wisdom. |
| Purge me with hyssop, and I
shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter
than snow. |
| Make me to hear joy and
gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken
may rejoice. |
| Hide thy face from my sins,
and blot out all mine iniquities. |
| Create in me a clean heart,
O God; and renew a right spirit within me. |
| Cast me not away from thy
presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. |
| Restore unto me the joy of
thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free
spirit. |
| Then will I teach
transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be
converted unto thee. |
| Deliver me from
bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my
salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy
righteousness. |
| O Lord, open thou my lips;
and my mouth shall show forth thy praise. |
| For thou desirest not
sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest
not in burnt offering. |
| The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O
God, thou wilt not despise. |
| Do good in thy good
pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of
Jerusalem. |
| Then shalt thou be pleased
with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt
offering and whole burnt offering: then shall
they offer bullocks upon thine altar. |
Psalm 51 |
Isaiah 61
| The spirit of the Lord GOD
is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to
preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent
me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim
liberty to the captives, and the opening of the
prison to them that are bound; |
| To proclaim the acceptable
year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of
our God; to comfort all that mourn; |
| To appoint unto them that
mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for
ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment
of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they
might be called trees of righteousness, the
planting of the LORD, that he might be
glorified. |
| And they shall build the
old wastes, they shall raise up the former
desolations, and they shall repair the waste
cities, the desolations of many generations. |
Isaiah 61:1-4 |
Phillipians 3
| Brethren, I count not
myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I
do, forgetting those things which are behind,
and reaching forth unto those things which are
before, |
| I press toward the mark for
the prize of the high calling of God in Christ
Jesus. |
